In actuality, most of the messages are a few days old, but the ListServer software on "potato" dumped core a while ago and wasn't relaying messages. What does your customer service model look like? And, if >given the chance, would you change anything? Why? > We have a Help Desk (managed by staff, operated by students) that handles most of our customer service. We are making changes - we've decided that they need a full-time supervisor, so two of our support people will split that role. Also, we're increasing their training opportunities to add to their technical expertise. We also plan to greatly increase the quantity and quality of on-line (web) support resources. >2. How do you support hardware--installs, repairs, etc.? > When a new computer comes in the user is given the option of self-installing or having the Help Desk do it. The Help Desk always makes the network connection. Repairs are provided by our on-campus technician. Students working at the computer store do routine memory upgrades and other easy hardware work. >3. How do you support software--installs, help line, etc.? > Employees have the option of requesting a Help Desk worker to install new software and system upgrades. These are usually done by CD-ROM, often over the network. The Help Desk has a list of supported software that they're supposed to know, although they'll usually try new titles or refer problems with them to someone who is familiar. Keeping up with software is a problem at the Help Desk. >4. Who tracks your software licenses? > Our Computer Store makes the license agreements and keeps track of allocating the licenses. When someone wants to buy under an agreement, they contact the store, arrange for payment, and then the store contacts the Help Desk to do the installation. >4. What's your turnaround for providing support? Usually within the same week for an installation. Tech support is faster, depending on the anxiety level of the client and the difficulty of the problem. Repairs can take much longer, depending on workload and parts availability. --------------------------------------------------------------- Dave Votaw (dvotaw@georgefox.edu) (503)538-8383 ext. 2571 Dir. While there are still a few outstanding issues that aren't as smooth as we might hope, the overall approach seems to work pretty well. Each system is setup with a "guest account - required login" that allows us to pre-configure the level of access to local and network resources. Most software settings can be set at the "profile" level while still providing a limited option for local "temp/scratch" space on the hard-drive. The required login is authenticated against a campus-wide "accounts domain" that can be managed centrally. Multiple "user profiles" can also be maintained on the central NT Servers to customize the lab or classroom environment for individual instructors. I'm not sure this is the best solution for everyone, but it does seem to do the job for us. --Dave ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Dave Tindall + + + Executive Director + SPU Web Server: + + Computer & Information Systems + http://www..spu.edu/ + + Seattle Pacific University + + + http://paul.spu.edu/~dtindall/ + CIS HelpDesk: + + Internet: dtindall@spu.edu + (206)281-2982 + + Phone/Voice Mail: (206)281-2239 + help@spu.edu + ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From bnelson at willamette.edu Tue Apr 29 12:24:12 1997 From: bnelson at willamette.edu (Bill Nelson (TIUA)) Date: Fri Jul 16 16:34:31 2004 Subject: Lab Security Software In-Reply-To: Message-ID: We are using PCRdist and a tweaked registry with much success. And, if given the chance, would you change anything? Why? 2. How do you support hardware--installs, repairs, etc.? 3. How do you support software--installs, help line, etc.? 4. Who tracks your software licenses? 4. What's your turnaround for providing support? Any other information which you could provide would be welcome. You may either contact me by e-mail or phone. --Dave ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Dave Tindall + + + Executive Director + SPU Web Server: + + Computer & Information Systems + http://www..spu.edu/ + + Seattle Pacific University + + + http://paul.spu.edu/~dtindall/ + CIS HelpDesk: + + Internet: dtindall@spu.edu + (206)281-2982 + + Phone/Voice Mail: (206)281-2239 + help@spu.edu + ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From bnelson at willamette.edu Tue Apr 29 12:24:12 1997 From: bnelson at willamette.edu (Bill Nelson (TIUA)) Date: Thu Oct 5 10:00:19 2006 Subject: Lab Security Software In-Reply-To: Message-ID: We are using PCRdist and a tweaked registry with much success.
