I've been looking at a Quantum DLT 4700 and Legato NetWorker software to be specific. I wanted to see if anyone had experiences with this or other network backup solutions that you would care to share with us. Basically, we backed up 7 major UNIX servers in a single machine room, and 30 or 40 workstations throughout campus. Backups were a mixture of full and incremental and run each night, with a volume of several 100 gigabytes nightly. We were looking for a solution that would enable us to scale to the point of centralizing all UNIX and Windows 95 backup processes which would encompass several thousand clients and several terabytes of data nightly. The mechanism we choose was Exabyte jukeboxes holding either 48 or 80 media pieces (tapes), with each jukebox holding 4 drives that could run simultaneously. Though we examined Legato we ultimately went with OpenVision. The latter allowed you to get an enterprise level view. Backups could be automatically scheduled on any one robot and then rescheduled on the fly in the robot becomes unavailable for any reason (tape unit failure, network failure, host failure, etc). Legato was far too departmental in scope, and if memory serves, Legato wrote tape in a proprietary format wheras OpenVision used extended tar -- any UNIX box could read the tape with OpenVision being operational, and that is a real concern if you are recovering from a severe disaster. OpenVision also has a very nice GUI interface for user self-service restores. In other words, if someone accidentally deleted an important file, they could restore it themselves. We didn't have to maintain extra staff simply to do individual file restores, and users didn't have to wait till we got around to it. That's something I call win-win!! I realize that the scale in which I was working at NASA Ames was much larger in terms of major systems that we are likely to find at any but the biggest schools, but even on a small scale, it was an elegant and very robust solution. And it was and is highly reliable. -- Rob _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ /\_\_\_\_\ /\_\ /\_\_\_\_\_\ /\/_/_/_/_/ /\/_/ \/_/_/_/_/_/ QUIDQUID LATINE DICTUM SIT, /\/_/__\/_/ __ /\/_/ /\/_/ PROFUNDUM VIDITUR /\/_/_/_/_/ /\_\ /\/_/ /\/_/ /\/_/ \/_/ /\/_/_/\/_/ /\/_/ (Whatever is said in Latin \/_/ \/_/ \/_/_/_/_/ \/_/ appears profound) Rob Tanner Manager of Systems and Communications Linfield College, McMinnville OR (503) 434-2558 From priced at televar.com Mon Aug 18 14:53:44 1997 From: priced at televar.com (David Price) Date: Fri Jul 16 16:34:32 2004 Subject: Introduction of new member... Message-ID: <1340181100-64863355@csnw.com> Hello All! I'd like to take a few lines to introduce myself and why I've become a member of this list. My name is David Price and I'm with the Academic Technology Group (ATG), the new Apple Higher Education Sales Agent. We are charged with assisting higher education customers implement Apple and Macintosh technology to meet the needs of higher ed. staff, faculity and students in the Pacific Northwest (Wash, Ore., and Idaho). Some of you may be familiar with Computer Stores Northwest (parent company of the 5 Computer Store locations) - ATG is a new division of CSNW. Our primary role is pre-sales, in that we assist in technology development revolving around Apple products and related third party solutions. We are available for needs analysis, product/technology demonstrations and in some cases can provide evaluation equipment for larger opportunities and to evangalize the Mac platform in higher education. Our staff is just getting ramped up and I am primarily responsibe for the Portland-area metro schools. There will eventually be 8 people at ATG; 5 in Portland, 1 in Eugene and 2 in Seattle. The Eugene ATG contact is already in place and his name is Harry Phillipo (harry@csnw.com). We should have the remainder of our Portland staff very shortly (which will include a systems engineer) and the Seattle staff should be in place very soon. Who am I: I am fairly new to Oregon, having moved from Phoenix, Arizona in January of this year. From 1992 to 1996, I was Systems Engineer for Apple in the higher education division in Phoenix. I was responsible for pre-sales technical support for hied customers in Arizona and New Mexico. I hope that experience will be of value to you folks in the trenches. What's this list all about?? Per the suggestion Jeb Jeb Weisman @ Pacific, I subscribed to this list to better understand the day to day support issues you face and to assist in providing relavent solutions. If anyone has a list FAQ or a quick summary as to the goals of the list, it would help me better filter information I come accross daily to decide whether it would be beneficial to the list. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to send me a copy of their distribution control file to see if I have omitted any important items. I was also curious if anyone could explain what I need to include in my Master folder pref. I currently am using "AppleShare:name of server:name of master folder", and it can't find it. Being a Mac guy, I am not very comfortable with pathnames. Thanks for the help. When I am finished I would be willing to share any insights I may have with others who are looking into using it. ********************************************************************** ** Adam Buchwald ** Pacific University ** ** Computer Service Specialist ** University Information Services ** ** Phone: (503) 359-2926 ** 2043 College Way ** ** buchwald@pacificu.edu ** Forest Grove, OR 97116 USA ** ** ** ** ********************************************************************** From krupicka at pacificu.edu Tue Aug 5 15:38:01 1997 From: krupicka at pacificu.edu (Ted Krupicka) Date: Thu Oct 5 10:00:19 2006 Subject: Backup solutions Message-ID: Hi all, We are looking into autoloading tape backup solutions for our servers over the campus network.
