From rdavis at up.edu Mon Nov 3 15:27:34 1997 From: rdavis at up.edu (Robert Davis) Date: Fri Jul 16 16:34:32 2004 Subject: Macintosh Rebuild Message-ID: Hello all, My name is Robert Davis and I work at the University of Portland. One of my primary responsibilities is to create and maintain rebuild procedures for the systems on campus. Primarily being a PC oriented campus, we have had no problem coming up with a method that works for us with the PC, but we have had problems on the Mac side. What we are trying to look for is a way to easily and quickly wipe a Mac hard drive and copy a 'clean' system onto the computer. Ideally, we would like to do this from the network, but using a external hard drive has also been considered. The main problem we run into is the different models of the Macs. We would prefer not to create a build for each model. What I am asking for are any suggestions on how we may accomplish our goals. I would also like to hear how some of your institutions deal with similar things concerning Mac rebuilds. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and effort. I don't see any way to maintain different systems for different mac models, but RerRdist works from a script, so you can have it use different system files for different models. You just have RevRdist on different machines point at the appropriate script. RevRdist isn't the simplest solution to this problem but is is comprehensive and it's free! http://www.purdue.edu/revrdist/welcome.html is the url to go look at which includes good explanations on what it does andhow it works. -Irv On Mon, 3 Nov 1997 15:27:37 -0800 Robert Davis wrote: > > Hello all, > > My name is Robert Davis and I work at the University of Portland. OK, I know you all have been waiting for the word from the "Mac campus." We use RevRDist in all public labs... since we have moved to all PPC Macs in these areas life is easier. We have only three RevRDist scripts. One for Macs connected to scanners, one for classroom Macs, and one for all others... RevRDist is the only way to go... We also have a canonical Mac list. This defines the campus standard for what should be loaded on each college Mac, i.e. deployed to faculty or staff. It lays out what should and shouldn't be load on a particular model based on the system and amount of memory available. You can find Reed's canonical list at http://web.reed.edu/resources/cis/resources/canonical.html On new Macs, software is loaded by Hardware Services before a Mac gets deployed. All Macs that are passed down, i.e. someone get a new Mac and someone us gets their old Mac, go into Hardware Service. They get wiped clean and a new set of software from the canonical lists gets loaded on before they are delivered to the faculty or staff office. This loading gets done from external hard drive set up for this purpose. Hope this helps.
