The criteria for our selection is that it must be cross platform, supporting both PC and Macintosh formats. I have found a package from Senecio Software Inc. called MaCati 2.5, which is a questionnaire developer with ePoll as the data collection feature. Do any of the Consortium members use these products? Are any of the nw-heat colleges using polling software, and if so, what is the package? I would very much appreciate hearing from you. In drafting a proposal to address these needs, many questions have arisen. If you provide student access to scanning and color printing (and other high-end resources), please share your experiences with me. -What space accommomdates these resources? Are they in a general computer lab? Are they in a special "student resource center?" -What equipment is available? -What types of applications do you provide? -What services do you offer? -How do you support the resources? Do you use student staff from the computer group; are the resources unsupported; or are they supported by the student government? -How much (and what type of) technical training is required by those who support the resources? Do you provide the training? -What are the hidden "costs" of offering these resources? -Any other comments? I'll appreciate any thoughts you can offer. Are they in a general computer lab? Are they in a special "student resource center?" ***Whitman has color scanners located in most general-access labs, in our multi-media lab, and also in a number of specialty labs (like Physics, Geology, Writing Center). They are during all hours the labs are open. ***We also have a hi-res color laserprinter located in our largest lab, although we charge $1.00 per page, so it is located inside the student consultant's office in this lab so students pay before receiving their printout. Another hi-res laser is located in our Science building, in the administrative office, again to control access and enable collection of printing fees. There are a few color deskjets around campus, including one located in a general lab that is accessible over the network. -What equipment is available? ****In addition to the above equipment, students have access to a slide scanner, a film recorder (both in multimedia lab), and can also check out items such as a digital camera from Technology Svcs. -What types of applications do you provide? ****Graphics scanning (Deskscan, Photoshop), OCR (OmniPage Pro -- although I don't like it much; anyone using good OCR software, I'd love to hear what you use!!!) Also multimedia production software such as Illustrator, Premiere, Director, Extreme 3D, Photoshop, Freehand, Canvas, etc -What services do you offer? *****A number of our student consultants have expertise with this hardware and software and are available to assist students. We also have a Multi-media specialist on our staff who is a resource when appropriate. -How do you support the resources? Do you use student staff from the computer group; are the resources unsupported; or are they supported by the student government? ****Resources are supported out of the academic computing budget; User support comes from staff and students -- staff supports the hardware; most of the software assistance and support comes from our student employees. -How much (and what type of) technical training is required by those who support the resources? Do you provide the training? *****We would like to invest much more training in our students as well as develop more in-house expertise. To date, most of the training has come from our most expert students teaching each other. We are working on a more comprehensive training program, including offering workshops to users. -What are the hidden "costs" of offering these resources? *****probably the biggest cost is in staff time, as the hardware and software is much more likely to act up and require repeated support. Also, the machines running this equipment are much more vulnerable to students who see themselves as experts and change configurations. It is difficult to lock down a multimedia production machine, so these machines get messed up *a lot*. Computers that just have scanners, however, are locked down (their setups, that is) so they are relatively stable. Other than that, the presence of this equipment does create an increased need for expertise and training among staff and student employees that is sometimes hard to keep up with. Hope this is helpful-- let me know if I can give you any additional info... We were looking over our web server logs and got to wondering how the usage of our web server stacks up to other schools around here. We're seeing about 45Khits/day -- and yes, I know what a bad metric "hits" are. Guessing we average about 8-10 "hits" per page viewed (random guess) we're at about 4500-5500 pages viewed a day. Is this high, low or average? As you can see, I'm not looking for hard 100% accurate figures, just something to give me a feeling. If folks will reply to me I'll post a summary to the list. As of this morning we will have about 60 people representing 16 institutions. We look forward to hosting you on our campus (if anyone needs another copy of the program, just let me know). As many of you know, NW-Heat is a very loose organization that exists simply because we all want to participate. In order to plan meetings such as the one on Friday, and to plan other group activities, there is an equally loose organization of a "Board of Directors" of NW-Heat. The only requirement for being on the board is that you want to come to the board meetings (which occur about once a semester in addition to the larger group meetings), and that there is one representative per campus. It has become a tradition to have a no-host board dinner the night before each of the larger meetings, and this semester is no exception. On Thursday night the board will be gathering at Koji Osakaya Japanese Fish House in Lake Oswego at 6:00 pm for dinner (Koji's is about 2 minutes from campus). If any of you are interested in being on the board, we would love to have you. Please send me an email message expressing your interest to participate, and to come to the dinner, and I will send you the directions. Hopefully we will see some of you on Thursday evening, and the rest on Friday morning at 8:30am. --Bret ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bret Ingerman e-mail: ingerman@lclark.edu Executive Director phone: 503-768-7227 Information Technology fax: 503-768-7228 Lewis & Clark College url: http://www.lclark.edu/~ingerman 0615 S.W. It's just about finals here so like you all, I'll be a bit busy, but I'll get to it. Fourth, I'm very excited about adapting the Pacific call tracking database Alli Batty has been working on to NW-Heat use. Bret, Alli, and I will work on some of the details and then figure how to get this show on the road. Fifth, I'm looking at a TCO model that has just been posted on the web. I'd like some substantive comments and if you think it has merit, perhaps we might start a collaborative initiative on this subject using this or a similar model (I don't want to reinvent the wheel). The model can be found at: http://www.genacc-us.com/tco.htm I like it for it's relative straightforwardness and that because it comes from and insurance company, it might have some legitimacy in the eyes of financial officers (and it literally has a "Futz Factor"). I've been asked to coordinate the Y2K efforts here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kent Hendrickson forwarded your note to me. We've taken a 'local control with coordination' approach to most of our Y2K issues here on campus. We have developed a methodology for making sure the campus is Y2K compliant. Individual departments, starting at the college level, have designated Y2K representatives; the representatives are responsible for completion of a number of tasks or steps to ensure Y2K compliance. Each department also has a compliance officer (other than the representative) who will give written notification when the department is Y2K compliant. In addition to the above department representatives, we have designated system representatives (and compliance officers) for applications that support multiple departments (eg. e-mail). System representatives are also working on administrative systems. Note: We have not separated administrative systems and embedded systems (you might have referred to the latter as facilities?) from academic areas in our methodology. We have monthly meetings for the Y2K representatives. We publish our methodology, status reports, etc. via the web: www.unl.edu/year2k. You may wish to take a look at our web pages; our methodology, lists of representatives, status reports, minutes of meetings, etc. can be found there. We have awareness articles periodically in our faculty/staff newsletter. We give presentations to various groups on campus to increase awareness and explain our methodology. We have yet to address the students RE Y2K issues. We plan to be working on this issue very soon. ========================================= Indiana U. http://www.indiana.edu/~year2000 ========================================= U of Manitoba: Ardoth, here at the U of M our VP Admin. requested that each Faculty and Administrative unit appoint a Year 2000 coordinator. He appointed our Director of Internal Audit as the chair of the resulting committee. We had the first meeting of this committee (about 45 members) last week. At that meeting we explained the Year 2000 problem and asked the coordinators to return to their units and compile a list of equipment and software in their units that may require replacement. Our VP and the VP's of three other schools in the province will be making a joint proposal to Government for special funding. We also have appointed several individuals in IST as contacts, who can direct staff to the appropriate person on campus. As well, the Associate VP of Research will be sending out a letter to all researchers regarding the Year 2000 problem. We have a web page for disseminating information and have setup a listserve communicating with the committee. Hope this helps. I was a bit bummed about not being hired by Keiko, but maybe next year . Second, a welcome to everyone who was new to the meeting, and especially to those schools who had not before attended (Whitman, Warner Pacific, Seattle U.) My apologies to anyone I missed, but I haven't seen the attendnce list yet. Next, a reminder, anyone who wanted something from me send e-mail to this list and I'll try to get it out. With the growing use of switched hubs, no port will see the traffic of any other port. The paradigm in which packet sniffers were created has gone away, rendering them useless (IMHO). What would be more interesting to me is some kind of 'site license' for all the NW-HEAT member schools of a software monitoring package like Cabletron's Spectrum Element Manager. > > 2) Tools we discussed. The URL for the contituent group is http://www.cause.org/member-dir/cg/y2k.html ========================================= Virginia Commonwealth: http://fin400.vcu.edu/WEBSAMP/Y2K.htm. ========================================= University of Nebraska-Lincoln: By way of introduction, my name is Gary Aerts.
