Pacific has a pool of 16 14.4 modems that connect for bbs style, text only access. This free service allows for access to e-mail, the library catalog and databases, and lynx web browsing. We do not make ISP recommendations but we do point students and staff to www.thelist.com to see options in the area. We've talked about ISP deals but have not found the right fit as of yet. Some local ISP's have student/faculty prices but you can beat them elsewhere if you shop around. As for the future, I believe we will get out of the on campus modem pool business for students. I've heard offers on the radio for free dial-up access and even one for one that said they would pay you $.25 per hour to surf. As we found with our current modems, the technology passed us buy long before we had funds to replace it. With DSL, cable modems, wireless, and standard modems all in the marketplace now I think we would be passed up quickly again making a purchase now. -Ted Krupicka ********************************************************************** University Information Services Technical Operations Manager Pacific University E-Mail krupicka@pacificu.edu 2043 College Way Phone (503) 359-2927 Forest Grove, OR 97116 Fax (503) 359-3162 ** For UIS policy, procedures or help information see the URL below ** **************** ******************** On Mon, 19 Jul 1999, Margaret Worley wrote: > Greetings everyone, > > Thanks to those who attended summer camp last Friday. Because of the limited model pool, we've tried a couple of ISP arrangements with discounts for members of the campus community. The current one is the Campus !nteract service through a contract with Bellevue Community College. Cost is $10.95/month, unlimited access time. We would like to get out of the PPP business but want to make sure that off-campus users have the same access as on-campus users. We are currently working with ISPs who would either provide dial-up access at their site with VPN access for students/faculty to on-campus services or would install a server at Reed and provide 24/7 management. Alumni could pay for internet only access at the ISP at reduced cost. If we are not able to negotiate a contract with an ISP that provides the access we need at a reasonable cost we will likely purchase a router with 56kb digital modems and ISDN PRI. These modems are much more stable than our current analog modems so, hopefully, access would be more reliable with less management time. This would provide 23 56kb modems for student/faculty access. There are no plans to upgrade alumni access. Cost is about $10,000 for the router with modem, ISDN PRI, and DSU/CSU cards. We may explore a deal with one of the local ISPs someday, as the likelihood of signigicantly upgrading our home connection support is slim.
