That makes it a good for construction but lousy for maintenance. We use PC-Rdist for the maintenance function. It and RevRdist (similar Mac product) looks at the client volume and only updates what's needed. That might mean putting something back that got deleted, is old or deleting something that got added. On a machine that doens't need any thing, the checking literally takes seconds and seldom takes more than a minute. PC-Rdist MIGHT be able to build complete volume in the first place but we haven't been able to figure out how to do it. I think the problem is that it doesn't handle registry things very well. But RevRdist on Macs does both "construction" and "maintenance" function well. BTY we set up RevRdist on employee machines to run at every startup to check virus protection. If it's current, it's done and out of the way in seconds. If it needs to be updated, it takes a few seconds more. Later this year we're going to explore doing this on windows machines too. We use WinShield for windows and FoolProof for Macs to preserve the drives as much as possible so (x)rdist have less to do. -Irv --On Thu, Oct 21, 1999 5:20 PM -0700 "Prescott; Jerilyn" wrote: > We are exploring the use of Ghost to rebuild our lab machines at the > University of Portland. Special interest session on web content: how to get web authors going, how to keep them going, IT's role in supporting the process. Might even discuss what works and what doesn't on IT web pages (i.e. what can we put up that our users will actually read/use) If we want a "second track" of interest groups, I'm open to topics. Especially the price! BTW about the unique SID issue with Ghost that Shelly mentioned. T hey now have an automated SID changer called GhostWalker to take care that. Best of luck! Message-ID: Greetings, After receiving e-mail from some of you, and a few phone calls, the fall meeting is a go. This is mainly a chance for us to gather and discuss technology issues at our institutions - either successes or failures - and perhaps even brainstorm on some of the issues. The general plan is: Friday, November 19th, at George Fox University (Newberg, OR) 9am - 2pm General session in the morning: roundtable for introductions and comments on how things are at each institution, any "hot issues," etc. Special interest session on ResNet issues: registering students, security issues, what works, what's next. Special interest session on web content: how to get web authors going, how to keep them going, IT's role in supporting the process. Might even discuss what works and what doesn't on IT web pages (i.e. what can we put up that our users will actually read/use) If we want a "second track" of interest groups, I'm open to topics. PLEASE give me feedback on: 1) topics for a second track, if wanted, and 2) if your institution will attend, and how many will come. I know many of you all are at EduCause this week (I'm holding down the fort) but a reply by, say, Nov. 3rd would be appreciated to help me make final plans.
