I think this is a different product than you are asking about though. It is a server level product, not a desktop product. VirusWall scans all incomming and outgoing email, http and ftp traffic for viruses, cleans what it finds and then tells us, the sender and the reciepient what it did via email. -Irv --On Tuesday, January 2, 2001 10:26 AM -0800 Margaret Worley wrote: > Happy New Year everyone! > > The first question of the new year, as far as I know, is: > > Has anyone heard of/been using Trend Micro anti-virus software? We have been testing it for several months and I am very happy with it. I use it daily both at work and at home. My biggest complaint about IMP is the lack of an email search feature. We have added the ability to view both Word and Excel documents to the IMP system as well. We found a basic Word/Excel to HTML converter that plugs into IMP. We also enabled the spell checker and configured IMP to store user preferences in our LDAP server. IMP also searches for on-campus email addresses via the LDAP server. This printer is a few years old (before Tektronix got bought out by Xerox). It uses a solid ink, something similar to the "ink sticks" this Xerox 850 will use. I am not overly pleased with its photograph-style printing, but for cartoon-y graphics it works just fine. Our big problem comes when we drymount or laminate materials produced by this printer. The solid ink melts at about 180 degrees, and the common (cheap) laminators and dry mounting materials melt at 220 degrees. Unless we use special laminate/dry mount (expensive), the end result is one big smushed blotch of ink. Does that apply to this printer? I don't know. Xerox doesn't have WARNING: THIS STUFF MELTS on their web page. For small color printing needs, I strongly recommend inkjet. We use an HP 2500CM in our multimedia lab and while it isn't particularly suited for general lab use, I feel it would be excellent as a color printer for a work group. The biggest advantage is its ability to print up to 13 x 19. Inkjet runs when wet, but you can laminate, get excellent photograph prints (using photo quality paper) and it handles many weights of paper. For campus wide printing, Willamette has a Copy Center using a Xerox Fiery printer. It is big and expensive and has its own set of problems, but it seems to service our needs quite nicely. For black and white printing, we use HP Laserjet 4050TNs. 8.5x11, 24lbs paper only, but they are workhorses (bigger or special paper goes to either the copy center or the Tektronix 600 mentioned above). You will also find a PDF file with a parking permit. If you will be driving you can print this out, bring it with you, and place it on your dashboard. It will save you from having to make a trip back out to your car. We will be in the lower level of Marsh Hall and the best parking is probably in lot C. The parking permit is good in any of the general use parking areas. *** I will have network jacks setup for anyone wanting to bring a laptop computer loaded with your favorite bandwidth hogging application. Please bring a laptop if you would like to test out how the devices detect and manage the applications. We will be in a computer lab so laptops are not required. However, the lab computers will be on my campus network and will only connect to the test network over the Internet. Here are the links again if you need directions. Marsh Hall is building 1 on the map. http://www.pacificu.edu/welcome/directions.html http://www.pacificu.edu/welcome/map.html This page lists lodging options if you are still looking for a place to stay. http://www.pacificu.edu/admissions/undergrad/visits.html As a last note, the classroom will be filled to capacity so please let me know if you are planning on attending but have not registered. Likewise, I would like to know if you signed up but will not be attending. References: Message-ID: <3A76E9C1.EACCB0@plu.edu> Shannon, Our Office of Student Life does a student satisfaction survey every couple of years. With the exception of the last 2 years (with a new VP), we've been asked to help decide on 4-5 questions regarding technology. Aside from that, we've not done anything specific to services, labs, etc. If you are interested in getting the questions on our student life survey, let me know. Otherwise, I'd love to see what other schools are doing. One of my concerns with surveys is that questions might be perceived as some sort of promise or plan to provide services rather than information gathering. When expectations are raised, it would be nice for the money to follow but that doesn't always happen. Good luck and keep us posted. Looks like 2000 pages of color per month could translate to about $200 or so per month in color ink sticks. I was almost ready to jump at this, until I wondered whether that, plus a 2000 page quota would work for our small campus. Has anyone else with more modest color printing needs learned any more about this?
